About us

The C.H.S.-Foundation was established by Chica and Heinz Schaller as a gGmbH (gemeinnützige GmbH) in 2000. The aim of the foundation is to support biomedical research at the Universitiy of Heidelberg. By providing unbureaucratic funding for young scientists, the foundation intends to enhance the attractiveness of academic institutions and advance the future prospects of successful junior scientists.

The foundation promotes primarily scientists and projects in the fields of neurobiology or molecular infectiology, with a focus on virology. Present and past programs include the establishment of an endowed chair for Molecular Virology at the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Heidelberg, the annual awarding of the Chica and Heinz Schaller research prize and fellowships for young research group leaders. The foundation supports the international Master’s Program “Molecular and Cellular Biology” at the University of Heidelberg and sponsors seminars and symposia.
